“Do Something, Do Nothing, Do …” is a critical artwork that examines themes of control, superficiality, and the illusion of choice in education. The central figure is a teacher with a CCTV camera as their head, symbolizing the pervasive surveillance and authoritarian oversight in educational systems. Surrounding the teacher are children with empty heads but beaming, forced smiles, representing a façade of happiness and compliance. Next to the CCTV head is the sentence, “I can’t do anything with…,” highlighting the disconnection and helplessness felt within a system that emphasizes control over genuine engagement. The artwork critiques the superficial nature of enforced contentment and the often oppressive dynamics between authority figures and students. Through its stark imagery and evocative text, “Do Something, Do Nothing, Do …” invites viewers to reflect on the nature of control and the cost of conformity in educational environments.

Surrounding the panda is a scene that conveys a haunting silence. The phrase “Be Quiet” is subtly inscribed, alluding to the oppressive silence enforced in Xinjiang’s internment camps and the harsh realities faced by individuals in residential schools. This oppressive quietude is accentuated by the menacing presence of a bloodied school table, a stark symbol of torture and suffering endured by those subjected to these regimes. In the background, a somber portrait of Mao Zedong looms large, representing Communist China’s historical context and its impact on the country’s socio-political landscape. Mao’s photo, rendered with a sense of foreboding, adds a layer of historical weight and critique to the artwork.

“Imagination 01” captures a magical family moment through the eyes of a surprised young girl at its center. Her father appears as a dinosaur, her sister as a graceful horse, her mother as a delicate flower, and her brother as a lively noise bird. Set against a sunny seaside backdrop, the artwork blends reality with fantasy, celebrating the playful and imaginative nature of childhood within a serene holiday scene.

“Imagination 02” presents a surreal and imaginative scene where a monkey’s brain springs forth as a dynamic train set, reminiscent of Thomas the Tank Engine. A young boy gazes in awe as trains emerge from the monkey’s head, symbolizing the fusion of thought and fantasy. The background features a striking black-and-white circular pattern, which conveys a sense of chaos and whimsy, enhancing the fantastical and eclectic nature of the artwork. Through this vibrant juxtaposition, the piece explores the boundless creativity of the imagination and the interplay between reality and dreams.
